St. Louis Rookie Breaks HL Record

by Andy Kicza

Enemencio Pacheco has turned a quality rookie season into a record setting rookie season. Early in Wednesday’s game at home against Chicago, Enemencio struck out his 305th batter of the season breaking Roy Oswalt’s 2006 record for most strikeouts in a season. Pacheco, the front-runner in this year’s HL rookie of the year race, has now set his eye on Roy Oswalt’s MBLS record of 327 strikeouts in a season. Pacheco has five scheduled starts left this season and is on pace to shatter all league strikeout records with 355 in a season.

Glaus, Thompson earn MVP honors

For the second consecutive season, the Most Valuable Player in the Hodges League was handed to Atlanta's third baseman Troy Glaus! His season features a batting average of .303 (180 hits in 594 AB), 36 doubles, 7 triples and 47 bombs. Glaus collected 142 RBI and 138 runs as well. He finished first in the Hodges League in RBIs and first in homeruns! Glaus won the award for the 2nd time in his 9-year career.

In the Johnson League, Cincinnati's leftfielder Craig Thompson added to his trophy case by picking up the JL MVP trophy for 2007. This year, Thompson drove in 93 and scored 88 runs while batting .419 with 8 longballs. He finished first in the Johnson League in batting, and captured the Jon Matlack Award for the league's outstanding rookie earlier this week.

Gordon, Thompson capture Matlack Awards

Alex Gordon was named the Hodges League Jon Matlack Award winner today. Brooklyn's third baseman put up pretty good numbers for a rookie this year. This 23 year old kid will probably have a long and successful career! While compiling an on base percentage of .376, Alex hit .287 and slugged .537. He has collected 89 runs batted in this year.

Meanwhile, Cincinnati's Craig Thompson smiled as he was named the Johnson League Jon Matlack Award winner. His season features a batting average of .419 (269 hits in 642 AB), 12 doubles, 4 triples and 8 taters. Thompson collected 93 RBI and 88 runs as well.

Mired in the midst of a 6-game losing streak, the Oakland Mules are searching for ways to pull themselves out of their two month funk. While the callup of OF Corey Hart from AAA Aliquippa temporarily sparked the offense in May, 4/5 starting pitchers Livan Hernandez and Russ Ortiz have struggled with control, walking nearly 6 batters per 9 innings between the two.

Mauer, Burns capture Matlack Awards

The 2006 Hodges League Jon Matlack Award was presented to catcher Joe Mauer of the Norfolk Tides. Mauer put together impressive numbers for a rookie en route to win the first major award of his career. Let's hope more will follow for this 25 year old ballplayer. His season featured a batting average of .354 (192 hits in 542 AB), 50 doubles, 10 triples and 18 taters. Mauer collected 103 RBI and 96 runs as well. He finished 1st in the Hodges League in batting. Getting an award is a nice way to start a career.

Meanwhile, Bay City's Deacon Burns smiled as he was named the Johnson League Jon Matlack Award winner.

Stallions mount comeback to capture Cup

INDIANAPOLIS - In the end, it all came down to one fateful inning. The Indianapolis Stallions mounted a dramatic eighth inning comeback to take the seventh and deciding game of the 2006 Stengel Cup Series, thereby ensuring that the MBLS championship trophy will call Victory Field home.

The Houston Broncos jumped out to an early lead in the top of the third inning off Stallions starter Doug Sessions. Richie Sexson led off the inning with a solo homerun deep into the left field stands. Catcher Mike Tonis followed with a triple down the right field line, and scored on a sacrifice fly by the next batter, Houston pitcher Jason Marquis...to give Houston a 2-0 lead.

Good Old Fashioned Pitchers' Duel

INDIANAPOLIS - Hoping to capitalize on the momentum from a game one victory, Indianapolis manager, Nathan Foster, sent the injury-plagued Kerry Wood to the mound in game two. Normal number two man, Nate Cornejo, simply hadn't been getting the job done in the playoffs, and Wood's intensity promised to be a good match for the situation.

Wood gave everything he could, and couldn't have been much better, striking out 14 men (including 8 of the last 9 men he faced). But the last strikeout was a costly one. As the seventh inning drew to an end, Wood was clearly in pain. As he left the field, one could see both that he wanted to continue, and that he clearly could not. As Wood was sent to the hospital for testing, the game went on.

Stallions' Horse Outduels Broncos' Best in Game One

INDIANAPOLIS - Still high from Indianapolis' first JL Championship, Stallion fans packed Victory Field for game one of the Stengel Cup Series. Scalpers and ticket brokers were the beneficiaries of skyrocketing ticket prices. There was some speculation that longtime Stallion, Kerry Wood, would get the call for the first Stengel Cup game in Indianapolis history. But. when skipper, Nathan Foster, announced that staff ace and JL Tom Seaver front runner, C.C. Sabathia, would face Houston ace, and HL Tom Seaver favorite, Barry Zito, in the opener, the excitement in Indy hit a fever pitch.
