Mauer, Burns capture Matlack Awards
The 2006 Hodges League Jon Matlack Award was presented to catcher Joe Mauer of the Norfolk Tides. Mauer put together impressive numbers for a rookie en route to win the first major award of his career. Let's hope more will follow for this 25 year old ballplayer. His season featured a batting average of .354 (192 hits in 542 AB), 50 doubles, 10 triples and 18 taters. Mauer collected 103 RBI and 96 runs as well. He finished 1st in the Hodges League in batting. Getting an award is a nice way to start a career.
Meanwhile, Bay City's Deacon Burns smiled as he was named the Johnson League Jon Matlack Award winner. Burns hit 13 taters last year while batting .309. He added 34 doubles, along with 79 runs scored.
